Trainee/Clinical & Translational Investigator

The NIH-funded Brain Vascular Malformation Consortium (BVMC, U54 NS065705) is soliciting applications to support clinical/translational investigators who focus on the study of rare neurovascular diseases, including: cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM), Sturge Weber syndrome (SWS), or hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT).

Eligibility

We are seeking to support advanced post-doctoral or clinical fellows, junior faculty, or established investigators who wish to develop or refocus their careers on clinical research in rare diseases. Under exceptional circumstances, we will consider applications from medical and graduate students proposing year-long projects. BVMC scholars should choose a mentor and research project aligned with one or more of the three BVMC Projects at cooperating institutions. There is wide breadth and depth of expertise spread across the BVMC that provides a rich research and mentoring environment.

Required Materials

Selected scholars will be expected to develop a detailed training plan with input from their mentor that is appropriate for their career stage and is expected to conduct the following:

Design and implement a clinical research project related to one of the three main BVMC Projects.
With the aid of local or BVMC biostatistician, perform the data analysis for the research project.
Make a presentation describing the results in a local research seminar series, scientific conference, and to the BVMC Executive Committee.
Draft and submit a manuscript for publication describing the results of the research.
Draft a five-page outline of a proposal for future grant funding.

Instructions

Applicants should submit:

Two-page letter of intent that briefly describes the candidate (areas of expertise, past training, and past and current research along with their role), primary mentor and mentorship record, trainee project, training plan (e.g., coursework, seminars, workshops, etc.), and how this support will further their careers.

Funding

The total budget cannot exceed $55,000 per year. Typically, this is used to support trainee salary and fringe benefits with a minimum of three calendar months of effort devoted to training and the research project.
However, if the full amount is not needed for salary and benefits, part or all of it can be used for research expenses (research personnel, supplies, etc) for the trainee’s project. In such cases, a detailed budget and justification are required.
Funding duration is for one year.
Applications will be evaluated by the BVMC Executive Committee in five domains: (1) Track Record; (2) Research Plan; (3) Training Plan; (4) Resources; and (5) Career potential.
Anticipated start date is July 1, 2023.
